Yes really-we have a copy of the original title and the bill of sale... This car WAS owned by Elvis!
First, the boring stuff. This is a really rare, coachbuilt station wagon conversion done by Maloney in Illinois with Cadillac's blessing. Unlike lesser conversions, Moloney actually stamped new quarter panels and roofs out of steel, and did full metal work to the body. It's an OEM level of detail you won't find today. The base car is a loaded up Sedan DeVille hardtop, and it's got just about every gadget and convenience item GM had at their disposal. This behemoth clocked in at a staggering $16,549 on the original bill of sale...this wasn't a low line car.
The years have been quite good to the body. The paint had faded and there was some rust under the pink vinyl top, so the decision was made around 20 years ago to paint the entire car. We have pictures of the teardown and process, and it was just about a complete bare metal job. There is some ghosting on the edges of the panels from buffing the paint thin but it shows well. Everything else bolted to the body appears original down to the vinyl top, which was very carefully peeled back and reused.
Inside, the car is 100% stock tan leather, and it's in great shape. The seats show no real wear and the carpets are clean. It looks just like an 8000 original mile car should. The gauges all work as does the radio and all of the windows. It's a time capsule.
Under the hood is a massive 472ci V8 which makes a pile of torque while running nearly silently. It's exactly the right motor for such a large car, and it's also nearly all original.
For paperwork, we've got a bunch of owners including the most important and first. A number of years ago a past owner had the state of Tennessee pull their records on the car, and wound up with copies of the bill of sale, the MSO and the original title. All pieces have Elvis' name on them, so there's no doubt he owned it. It was bought at Madison Cadillac, his favorite dealer in Memphis, and was one of FIVE that he bought that day. This one was signed to him while others were given away as Elvis was prone to do. According to the Elvis Cadillac website at http://elviscadillacs.tripod.com/elvis2.html, he bought one for his uncle Vester Presley, Gee Gee Gamble (his cousin's husband and also one of his aides), Mrs Barbara Klein and an Eldorado for Sonny West. This was the fifth car, and title transfer records show it was kept in Elvis' name until the next July when it was sold through Jack Self Motors in Birmingham, AL.
We have the full title history beyond that point and up until the present day. This is a really unusual car with a great twist in regal ownership. If you've wanted a unique vehicle that is sure to start conversations you won't find a wilder choice.
At the Motor Car Group, we're enthusiasts first. We want you to enjoy your new car from the minute it's delivered and the trailer door drops. Before a car leaves our shop, it's gone through comprehensively, both visually and mechanically. We do more than just kick the tires, though: We change every fluid from the oil to the differential to the brake fluid to the convertible top hydraulic oil. We do this after you buy the car so that your “maintenance clock” starts when you get it, and not months prior! We fill your tires with nitrogen, road test (if the weather permits us here in Cleveland!) and clean it inside and out. We buff the paint using a three-step process immediately before it's taken away so that it gleams when it arrives. Every car we sell, from Sunday drivers through the rarest exotics, is meant to be driven-get out there!
If you have any questions before, during or after the sale, do not hesitate to contact us. It's what we're here for! We're 26 miles from Cleveland Hopkins Airport and we can pick you up when you come to inspect or purchase your car. We welcome any prospective buyers, their buyer's agents or inspectors from Monday through Friday during business hours, as well as evenings and weekends by appointment.
